Coqui del Mar Guest House is nestled in a beachside community of San Juan, 1-minute walk to Ocean Park beach. It is a gay-friendly beach and the favorite beach for locals. Ocean Park has a much more “locals” feel than the other tourist areas, such as Condado or Isla Verde, which is one reason we consider it the best beach in Puerto Rico. For those who are adventurous, a portion of the beach known as “Las Uvas” (The Grapes) has a very active nighttime scene.

At night you will fall asleep to the evening songs of the Coqui (a small endemic frog and symbol of Puerto Rico).  Only the male frog sings, and you’ll see that they too are enjoying their gay-welcoming surroundings.

Our location is walkable to several restaurants, bars, and a grocery store and the gastronomic delights of Calle Loíza, such as the health conscious vegan/vegetarian Super Foods, or, for the guys that want some meat (who doesn’t?), the original meaning of barbecue, Barbacoa (must try their clam chowder, trust me).  El Chingon is our favorite Mexican restaurant (about 7 minutes walk)…get the frozen margarita (bring me back one too).

Close to Ocean Park are the neighborhoods of Santurce with its lively art, dining and nightlife scene, as well as the bars, restaurants and casinos of Condado.

Further afield, there are miles of additional beaches in Isla Verde, fabulous drag shows and about 20 gay bars and clubs in the San Juan area, and hours of exploring in Old San Juan.

We do not recommend a rental car, as Ubers are typically very reasonable, and many places are walkable.  Parking is also complicated, and driving here can be a bit unpredictable.  Planning to explore outside the San Juan area?  Consider one of our Puerto Rico Gay Tours with pick up and drop-off at our place.

We are 10-minutes drive from SJU International Airport (Luis Muñoz Marin Rivera). Uber is the best option, though there is also the T-5 public bus (75 cents exact change, get off at Parque Barbosa station).
